Winter 2016-17 Call: Renovation of rooms at First UU Church of Los Angeles
For the last five years, First UU Church of Los Angeles has housed a preschool in their two large ground floor spaces. Every week, custodians transformed the shared space into preschool classrooms, and then back again to church rooms. The rooms received an incredible amount of wear and tear from the children and from the constant furniture moving. In July 2016, the preschool moved into a new, permanent space they had built as part of a larger project that included affordable housing and underground parking.
Now, they need to refurbish their rooms. In Channing Hall they need to refurbish the wood floor, repair and re-paint the walls, repair a room divider and remove acoustical tile. In the Severance Room they need to replace carpets, re-paint walls, remove an old air conditioning system, and purchase furniture.
Now that the rooms have a more singular purpose, First UU has much more latitude to add details and decorations that identify the rooms as Unitarian Universalist in ways that are appealing to visitors and potential members. They want Channing Hall to communicate UU values with beauty and warmth. They want the Severance Room to “tell the story” of First Church to their guests and display archival material.
Assistance from the Chalice Lighters Program will allow them to bring two lovely, but badly-worn rooms back to attractive shape – and then go the extra step to allow those rooms to “speak” for the church, telling visitors and reminding members who we are, where we come from, and where we are going.
